Jimmy Padia, founder of JPC Technologies, was part of a digital marketing project in 2008 during his tenure in GE. Business objective of project was to improve overall user experience of GE industrial site visitors. As part of www.geindustrial.com site we launched a feedback process through which site visitor can submit his/her feedback. Majority of the feedback was around site search. If you observe GE industrial is no simple site, it is repository of hundreds of thousands of documents, catalogs and publications of various GE products. GE had an in house site search engine which was also deployed on GE industrial site; however it was not very efficient. One major feedback of most users was easy searching on this huge document repository. According to them it was easy to search GE industrial site content / documents directly from Google than using the in site search function.
After analyzing various products / technologies we did a pilot on Google box. We purchased a Google box that comes with Google hardware and Google proprietary search engine. We made it crawl on GE industrial site and showed the search results to our beta users. They loved the search output which was completely customized for GE Industrial site. We launched Google search to live site in 2008. We collected feedback on new search engine and results were phenomenal. We compared old site search engine and Google search engine using Six Sigma tools. We were able to reduce the erroneous results and improved the defect score from 2 Sigma to 5 Sigma. We also improved overall user experience measured by Net Promoter score (NPS).
